Talent Management – The New Buzz in Corporates!
Talent management as a process was coined in 1990′s. It was an old buzz adopted quite late by the Corporates. It has different meanings for different kinds of people. For some it is the management of the most talented individuals that the organizations has. These would include employees with competitive backgrounds, A class qualification, latest hot skills and are considered the real profit earners.Individuals that sell like hot cakes because of their demand in the market.
For others including me talent management would mean managing talent across the organization irrespective of the designation, gender, department etc. It means to attract, retain & nurture every single employee in the organization only on the belief that Individuals develop because they can & have to.
Effective steps for Nurturing Talent :
- During Hiring :
- Give employment opportunity to employees who have a sound technical & soft-skills background. Do-not ever compromise on the quality of the employee you hire. As it is said that hybrid seeds would always yield better quality fruits.
- Pick up good employees from good organizations. By good organization I do not mean big brand names. Also make sure that they don’t have stability issues which means they are not switchers.
- Define salaries at Industry rates. It is one of the good ways of retaining the employee.
2. During Employment:
- Identify Training Needs for the employees.
- Make them go though the cycle of training, coaching, mentoring.
- Set achievable goals for the employees. During an employees employment duration he must have at least two tasks in hand that are challenging for him. So That he/she keeps trying to gain 100% proficiency.
- Monitor growth & provide new Job opportunities.
- Giving public & private recognizing individual efforts.
- Certify employees with upgraded skills, invest in the employees & then wait for ROI.
- Have local & global level awards in your organization.
- Job rotation, succession planning.
3. Retention Strategy:
- Providing promotions. This could overlap with the last point.
- Offer stock options, offer special schemes & incentives to retain talent.
- Monitory incentive is a smart way of retaining.
4. Post Employment:
- Keep track of all those employees who have added value to your organization.
- Rehire employees at hire positions & have a growth chart for them when they rejoin.
While managing talent the aim of any organization should be that of nurturing leaders. The organization must aim at providing a solid foundation of good ethical values & processes. But such that don’t work as obstacles in the growth of an employee but help him grow as a professional 7 a person.
