Attrition – The Inevitable!

Statistics say that cost of hiring a new employee is three times the salary of an existing employee.
Attrition will always remain the inevitable truth that any any Organization can never do without. No matter how much you pay to an employee or help him in his growth, he would still move on to work with your competitor because the other organization is ready to pay him more pay, perks & growth.
Attrition is said to be the most expected yet undesirable cost that every organization incurs. Organizations should always have a robust strategy that helps it retain some of its good employees. Hence, it becomes important to understand why employees leaving organizations in the first place.
Common Causes of Attrition :
- Job Dissatisfaction: As in Opportunities going into someone kitty.
- Bad Working Conditions: Improper lighting, State of the art facility, non AC cabs, Shared workstations,long working hours. This reminds me of Ehrenberg’s two factor theory wherein he talks about motivation & Hygiene factors.
- Interpersonal Team Conflict: At times employees are not able to gel with the team members.
- Reporting Issues: Attitude Problem. Constant conflicting situations with the manager.
- Unskilled or Over-skilled Resource: Either the employees knows it all hence, work becomes monotonous or is not able to upgrade to the latest technology or demand in the market.
- Salary & Promotion : is one of the most common reasons of leaving jobs.
- Lack of Acknowledgment or Appreciation by the Manager: When employees stop getting rewarded for the work they do, because it is very candidly put in front of them that they are doing their job.
- Other reasons: These are unavoidable reasons.Employees getting married, retiring, relocating to a different city or going out of country.
