Addressing Interpersonal Issues
It is always easy to gel with people who think like you, behave like you & have the same preferences & tastes.
But how do you get along well with the one’s who are your extreme opposites?
Talking about Interpersonal skills… the first thing that comes to my mind it to build good relationship’s & getting tasks completed by people who you do not get along well with. Most people assume that all human beings are ruled by the same set of basic instincts & desires. However, in reality we see both similarities & differences. So the first step to overcome the Interpersonal barrier is to know your REAL SELF. Also understand that their is nothing like the right or wrong. There are just different people, who do things differently & thus find it difficult to understand each other.
The Road of knowing yourself better : Start by asking five simple questions to yourself.
- Are you an Extrovert or an Introvert ?
- Are you Practical or give more emphasis to Relationships?
- Do you Think or Feel before you take a decision?
- Do you Plan you actions or do you go by Impulse?
- Do you drive Motivation from outside or from within?
EXTROVERTS: Are people who are concerned more with practical realities than with inner thoughts and feelings. They usually like action and variety. Prefer to communicate rather than write. Can easily indulge into multi tasking. INTROVERTS: On the other hand are people who tend to shrink from social contacts and are too preoccupied with their own thoughts.
PRACTICAL : These are people who use their five senses to gather information. Emotions have no role to play in their life. RELATIONSHIP ORIENTED: These ones have a very theoretical approach to life. They usually follow their hunches.
THINKERS: Are people who are driven by mind & evaluate pros & cons before taking a decision. FEELERS: Are people who are driven by their hearts & very soft spoken by nature.
PLANNED: These are people who like to live a very planned life with full control over it. They do one thing at a time. IMPULSIVE: These are always open to new thoughts, ideas & creativity. They start too many things together & then have problem finishing it.
EXTERNALLY MOTIVATED: These people drive energy from outside, by going to discos, concerts or by watching motivational movies etc . They love to be amongst people. INTERNALLY MOTIVATED PEOPLE: These people who drive motivation from within from exercising, yoga, listing to music, concentrating and they prefer silence while working on critical projects. They are like a one man army & find it difficult to work in teams.
Once you are able to analyze your self better, then come the next level where try to identify what type the person is based on the above questions. You would then know what kind of behavior should you adopt with the person to get the best out of him/her. To do a test run try to identify your bosses working style or your partners behavioral style. Gradually replicate the same model to more people around you & identify the best working pattern. The more people you meet, they better judgment you will have about them. And then over the years you addressing Interpersonal issues will no longer be a problem for you.
Cheers!!!
