Organizations grow because of the people who run it. No matter which industry an organization is in, it should always have one of its appraisal methods as 360 degree feedback. Deciding to implement a process like this, can be really tough for the organization. However, it is very fair from the employee perspective. Some organizations might feel it an inappropriate & a time consuming process, but I feel it is worth every penny. Organizations should be very clear on the reasons for wanting to implement a 360-degree feedback process.

360 Degree Feedback: is a type of multi source feedback as it contains feedback from upward, downward, peers & customers. It always aims at improving work performances of the employees.

Both the appraiser & the appraisees are affected either positively or negatively as an outcome to this process. But the real challenge in taking corrective & preventive actions.

The following are the reasons to implement this process:

  • To provide correct feedback to the managers & the management: Since it is a first hand information received by all levels, the chances are that it will be fully correct.
  • It helps managers develop leadership skills: As they would know, what the teams expectations are.
  • It helps improve relationships with all, provided it is share correctly with the appraisees.
  • It helps in magnifying all good & bad performances.
  • Enhances customer relationships.
  • It is not biased, as once you collect feedback from various sources, you reach to a common ground by averaging.
  • Their is a very thin line between the skip level and one element of 360 degree. Hence, employees & managers should be educated about it before they get into giving or providing feedback.
  • strongly talks about the open door policy that an organization has.

360 degree feedback should be used as a mid year appraisal process. However, it should not be used to promote or demote employees. Not to be used when it is the time for salary hike. As in that case it might just loose its importance because then the individuals will not get enough time for implementing on the feedback provided to them.
